(I'm off in a few minutes to NAPA to pick up my cable - figure even if I don't like it it will make a good spare to keep in the trunk)

Seems quite puzzling that pedal effort would be higher - pedal effort normally is reduced (temporarily, at least) with a new cable, and there wouldn't seem to be any big difference between the manual and stock cable to make a noticable difference.

I would question the use of graphite. It's not that great a lube. Graphite is usually used on speedo cables, because they are very long and turn very fast, and even a little resistance can add up over the length of a cable, but this is not an issue with a clutch cable, so a moly grease would be more appropriate. Also, one of the reasons for using grease on any cable is to keep water out, which can corrode the cable over time increasing drag.

So I would try removing the cable, lubing it well, and putting it back, paying attention to getting the bend nice and even as shown in the Saab cable SB and see how it feels.

Be sure to heavily lubricate the pivot block on the end - Saab sells a special, expensive grease, but says a silicone grease or marine grade grease can be used - the main thing being that it should be very water resistant.
