Theory:
When one changes the motor mounts on a car I imagine that the engine is lifted from the top with a chain that connects to the metal circular braces on the engine itself. The engine can probably be jacked up from the bottom, but any mechanic with the right tools will most likely lift the engine from up top I am guessing. My theory is that this can put strain on the head gasket bolts and thus the reason for my recent coolent loss problem.
Background:
I had my 97 SE in about week ago for other services (including new engine thermostat and motor mounts) and mentioned a slight coolent loss to the mechanic. I said that it was nothing major, because I added water to the plastic "bucket" on the drivers side of the car and mostly ignored the computer (which only came on once or twice over the last year. He didn't want to tighten the head gasket bolts in fear of ruining the head gasket- in case there was a problem more torque would magnify the potential effects.
A little over 3 years ago (at about 65k) I had a bunch of problems with coolent loss until a mechanic in San Diego tightened the bolts. All was good until recently. This morning (115k) I got in the car, received a "ding" from the computer that said "Coolent Level Low". I thought no problem and that I'd add water to the car the next time I filled up with fuel.
I get to work today and hear a "hissing" sound from the engine, open the hood and see that the fan behind the radiator is cooling the engine but also blowing coolent over a few of the hoses (again on the drivers side of the car). ARRRGGGG! Could this be prevented by just retourquing the darn head gasket bolts? There is no coolent visibly left in the "bucket" now...
The car temp was not running "hot" per se, but this is annoying. All of the hoses (from what I could see) looked fine, but I couldn't tell exactly where the leak was coming from. I state my theory above b/c it looked almost as if the leak were happening under the circular brace by which the car would be lifted to replace the motor mounts.
