Ok no answers to my last post so I found out some stuff. Comments/corrections appreciated.

- You can vacuum the system from either the HP or LP port (though do not do it with the engine running!). If you have all the fittings you might as well do both to try and get every smidgeon but if you have the usual one gauge LP filler hose you can get by fine doing it from the LP side only, after all it is a loop.

- You can make a cheap vacuum pump from an old refrigerator compressor, or buy an air powered venturi pump for $10 from harbor freight. However the HF one will require a fairly substantial shop air compressor to power it. Some Auto Zone stores are rumored to have them as loaners but mine didn't.

- A vacuum pump is well worth having. It lets you leak test the system without wasting refrigerant, and insures that the system is fully charaged and dry. I t also may make it possible to get by without replacing the drier.

- you want to keep the vacuum on for a while - a hour or so - since you are not just pumping out any old refrigerant and air, but also boiling away any moisture that has accumulated within the system, and this takes time

- Several people who have bought the HF pump complain that the fittings to hook it up the the system cost more than the pump. The easy way around this is to take a cheap filler whip and put a tee in the line, using barb tight fittings, a brass tee and a small valve to isolate the pump, all hardware store stuff, so you can hook up the vacuum pump and the refrigerant bottle at the same time. This lets you vacuum the entire system, including the filler whip line, and elimates any loss when switching line to go from the pump to the bottle, which increases efficiency, especially when using a second rate vacuum pump.
