So my leak the other day turned out to be a pinhole in one of the lower heater hoses (toward the bottom of the engine on the driver side that extend toward the rear of the engine compartment). The hoses had never been replaced, so it was time. Fine. No problem with a worn hose, it happens.

My thing is- how can one tell if a hose is about to go? When I pulled in the car they pointed out that the hoses were 8 years old and (to me at least) looked brittle. When I talked to the shop, they said that the hose just goes bad from the inside heat of the coolent and this is why they didn't catch it when the t-stat was replaced last week. The t-stat is literally 5 inches above this hose though (if that!).. the mech is looking directly down on the hose itself. Shouldn't this have been caught?

Now, with my recent coolent loss, the engine got hot and I have to replace the t-stat again (twice in a week).

I'd like to get feedback- Am I out of line in expecting that when the t-stat got replaced in the first place that the shop should have seen the heater hoses were old?
I mean isn't this why I bring the car into a 'reliable' mechanic in the first place? I would think that the prospect of continued repeat business is greater than the labor to replace a $12 t-stat (after all I've spent close to $1500 now over the past week with this guy!, and the shop is a Saabnet sponsor!)

In the end it's a free country, and there is another mechanic in the area that will probably start to get my business in the future. It's almost not the cost of the labor that I am concerned with, it's the fact that I feel that I am being almost double charged for labor and t-stat that I feel shouldn't have been neccessary.

If something this small gets missed- What other work will I pay for in the future that gets missed the first time around?
