The V6 is an Opel engine that I believe Saab stopped using after 1996. The issue is the timing belt and pulley assembly which need to be changed every 30,000 miles (although some say the new ones can go 60,000 miles). Saab paid for the first three but that was it. Unless you're a DIY'er I think it runs around $600 to have it done.
I've put about 80K on my V6 with no problems, other than valve cover leaks which are also problematic. It burns no oil and runs smooth and strong. I've changed the oil every 3K and followed all of the maintenance religiously.
If you do a search you'll get a LOT of info on the V6 - mostly bad. Unfortunately a fair number of people have had catastrophic failures due to no fault of their own and they tend to be more motivated to log onto BB's like this. All it takes is a slip or break of the belt and the engine is toast, so if it isn't done correctly or neglected it can be a nightmare.
I guess the bottom line is that it's a crap shoot. If it's been properly maintained and it's gone this far who knows? I would definitely check the maintenance records.
Hope this helps.
