On the 95SET you can slacken the strut shaft nut at the top of the upper mount while the vehicle is resting on the ground. You could also remove that nut but that serve no purpose at all. The vehicle weight is the spring compressor.
So yoy tried hammering on the end of the spline shaft? The nut can be postioned to protect the threads.
Koni wants anti freeze added to the tube for a heat transfer medium. I did not like that idea and I used oil.
The Koni retaining nuts are hard to tighten as they are round and no one has a big enough pin wrench to tighen them easily. I and others have had to re do it all. I used loctite blue the second time. When the nut gets a bit loose, you get rebound knocking, which goes away at first as the strut body warms and expands in length.
That really is quite the story that you wrote!
