The shift up light is a system devised to meet EPA fuel economy rules. It doesn't know you need to pass someone or slow down for a turn 300 feet ahead, it just makes shifting suggestions. My 88 900T doesn't have one (I removed the bulb, my Viggen doesn't have one. My wife's 9-5 has one and sometimes I think something is on the fritz since it looks like an idiot light blinking on the dash.
First gear is to get rolling up to about 10-15 mph. Then until the car warms up I keep it under 3000rpm. For normal driving, JJJAX suggestions are pretty close to what I do. For passing and accelerating, I shift at about 5000-5500rpm. If I am just trying to keep it under 25mph, I leave it in second gear even if I could go to 3rd. If I expect to be passing or needing to accelerate, I keep it at 3000rpm to keep the turbo all ready and spooled up, but with still enough reserve to double my speed without shifting, in other words, to make use of the broad range of torque.
