1996 900s ~125000mi

maybe someone can offer some suggestions as to what i should look at..

my car has been making a sound like rubber rubbing on rubber when i steer at low speeds (pulling into parking spots). definitely not a squeak - lower in pitch, and it sounds like it's coming from deep in the steering column or under the car. the steering wheel does not have to be turned all the way for it to happen. pretty sure it happens in both directions but i'm gonna check that out this weekend. i'm also gonna check that it's not the tires rubbing in the wheel wells but i feel like that would make a worse noise.

the steering itself feels fine. not tigher ot looser.

any ideas would be appreciated. thanks.
