I went from stock 02 9-3 SE suspension to the full Eibach pro-kit (springs + dampers). This was on 16" tires. Yes it made it a bit more harsh, especially on rough pavement. Then last December I went to 17" wheels with Pirelli PZero Nero M+S tires, an all season tire (215 width). After all this I find the ride to be compliant enough for my taste. I don't think it's harsh anymore. Plus it really handles now. I wouldn't change a thing. I think if you're willing to do 17's, you should drop it too, but only if you match the springs and dampers (ie Full eibach or full Koni set, etc).

If you did summer only or max performance style tires, these should have an ultra stiff sidewall, which would worsen your ride. You didn't say what kind of tire it is now. My all season 17's probably are more compliant than most summer/max perf tires. With that said, I made it through pothole season with no issues, but I have learned to drive around holes in the road now. You do have to be more vigilant with the bigger wheels.
