Your mechanic may be telling you the truth

The tricky thing about AC systems is finding the leak. The DIY kit is great if eveything in your system is working properly. Your mechanic may have determined that your system has some other issues, causing it to leak out all the expensive coolant. There is a compressor, evaporator, condensor, various hose all that have O-ring seals. If any one of those is bad or worn out the labor rate to repair them could add up to BIG$$, which may not be a good investment for a car that is 11 years old.
Before you waste $40-50 on a kit, ask your mechanic what specifically was the problem with your system. That will give you a better idea as to why he thinks your system is not worth fixing. Other wise there is a good chance any new coolant you add will leak out an evaporate in days.
