Air conditioning in our new '97 stopped the day after we bought it. Found major leak in one of the alu lines across the radiator. Fixed it, vacuumed and charged the system. Still no cold. Compressor is turning, and engine slows down when AC is turned on which suggests compressor is doing something.

Now here are the odd things. After being completely opened and vacuumed, it only took about 8oz - a little less than one can - to fill until the gauge read 35. Seems to me it ought to take more than that - I know Saab says 800gms whatever that is in "real" units.

Other oddity is that, while the car was running as I charged the AC (and these cars take the charge quite slowly), the radiator fan came on a couple of times, and when it did the AC low side pressure would drop from 35 to about 20, then, slowly build back up again when the fan stopped, taking a couple minutes to do so.
