SAAB roof rack: two canoes??

I'm considering adding the load bar extenders to the SAAB rack on our 9-3 so we can carry two canoes. The standard bars are short, barely wide enough for the beam of a big canoe. Has anyone put two canoes onto the SAAB roof rack with the bar extenders?
If it won't work, I'll lay 2x4s across the load bars, and fasten somehow. But I'd like to avoid that.
Thanks for insights-
klp
