Convertible motor vs. kit

Hi. I just bought a 96 900/turbo convertible with 88,000 miles. The car is in mostly good shape but does not have an operating top. The seller told me that it needed a 'Kit' that I could purchase for around $300 as opposed to replacing the motor for $1300 to $1500. When I called a Saab Dealership repair yesterday, the mechanic told me that only about 2 out of 5 kits work and suggested I put in the motor. When I told the seller this, he said the opposite. He said the head mechanic told him that shelling out $1,300 was a waste and the kits work just fine. I am upset I was so trusting and didn't do my homework. I would NOT have bought the car had I known the kits were thought unreliable.
Do any of you have experience with the kits and if so, have they been positive or negative? Any histories would be greatly appreciated.
Kevin in S. Florida PS....do any of you living in the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood area suggest anyone in particular for a Saab mechanic?
