Saab 9-3 Convertible Key Programming

I installed a remote car starter in my wife's 2003 9-3 Convertible. In order to get it to work, I had to permanently mount one of the keys into the car (using a special module with the remote start).
Well, my wife insisted that she have two keys available, so that meant I had to buy an additional key. When, the dealer went to program the new key, he erased the older key; the one installed in the car. They said that programming requires all keys to be erased, and programmed from scratch every time a new key is added.
I don't have a problem with that, but I want to get the third key (the one in the remote start) added also. The thing is, I want to avoid taking the dash apart again, in order to retrieve the key.
So... Here is my question finally!!
How does the programming of keys work? Do they trigger the "program mode", then stick each key into the ignition? Do they need to turn the key to accessory mode each time? Most importantly, if they were to start the car while in program mode, would it kick out of program mode? I was thinking that they could do something like this: 1. Enter program mode, 2. Use the remote start to start the car. This would register the remote start key. 3. Use the remote start to stop the car. This would take the remote start key out of the circuit again. 4. Insert additional keys...
Would this work, or do I have to go through all the hassle of retrieving that key!?
Thanks, Rob Runkle
