The auto: 1997 900SE with 64k miles, original owner.
The driver: Clueless about cars.
Just got the car back yesterday after a week in the shop for overheating problems. They replaced the thermostat, thermostat gasket and flushed the cooling system. They recharged the AC. They replaced the valve cover gasket and spark plugs. In addition, they said I was due for a new serpentine drive belt and idler pulley.
I drove the car on errands on the way home, the first time all summer with the AC functioning, and 5 minutes away from home, started hearing the dreaded warning chime over and over, with no clues coming from the dashboard lights. Got home, tried to restart, and the engine would not turn over. Jumped started it, and it died within a few seconds. Bought a battery charger and charged it up last night. The diagnostic on the charger said that the battery was in decent shape, but the alternator failed its test, but they could not guarantee the accuracy for any one given vehicle.
I was able to drive the 15 minutes to Sears today (a Sunday), chiming all the way. Could not restart the car in their parking lot and had to drive it into the shop with their charger under the hood. Got a new battery. (Mine was over 4 years old, anyway. Had a new alternator put in at that time, under warranty.) Was told that their diagnostics detected an electrical drain. Also, the sabre test results showed that I need a new alternator. Driving home, the chiming continued.
As far as I know, everything was fine regarding alternator/battery issues when I took my car in last week for the overheating problem. Was this bound to happen? Could replacing the serpentine belt and pulley have done something? I suppose I'm going to go back to my mechanic in the morning, after fully charging the new battery. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
