It's two different things to reset an ECU back to basic driving values and reprogramming an ECU with new software to cure a driving problem.
Every time when I read and reset fault codes on a Saab with the factory scan tool I also automatically reset the driving values (running parameters) of the ECU.
Most cars today have learning capabilities (driving habits) inside the fuel managment ECU. That also means that if the car is running bad for one or another reason, the ECU is trying to compensate for the bad running by altering the running parameters.
When the problem has been repaired it can be a good thing to reset the parameters inside the ECU so that it is back to basic.
The other part is when Saab has found out that they have a running problem with certain cars. In that case they might issue a software update to fix the problem. Only Saab 9-5 from 98 and up (9-3 from 2000 and 9-3SS) have the software capabilities (aka known as T7 and T8 fuel injection cars).
So to try to answer your question. If you have one of the T7/T8 cars it might be one or more software updates available all depending on if any has been done before.
Using the Tech 2 scanner and a Saab program installed on the PC I can check for updates very quickly.
I always suggest to have the latest updates installed since they are issued because of a known problem in each case.
I charge $30.00 for each update.
