I just bought a '02 9-3SE from <gasp> Carmax for 18K. It has 23K miles on it and I extended the warranty with one offered by Carmax for $1400. The 9-3 still has 1 year left of the GM warranty. The Carmax one I bought is a 4 year / 48K mile warranty. This means:
The 4 year part of the extended warranty starts now.
The 48K mile part of my extended warranty starts now, and is added onto the current mileage: 23K+48K = 71K
So my extended warranty expires Aug '09 or at 71K, whichever comes first.
I would think you can buy your extended warranty from whoever you want, but BEWARE - My wife bought an extended warranty through the carfinder service provided by our credit union. The warranty company went bankrupt, so she's screwed. She paid $1000 for a warranty she'll never be able to use... I would only buy an extended warranty from a well known company with plenty of cash (like GM).
16K for a viggen with 33K miles and suspicious dents on the rear sounds a bit high to me. Did you get the VIN off the car, or did the dealer give it to you. It's easy to copy a wrong letter. I've even had the title of my car to show the wrong VIN due to the lady at the DMV writing it down wrong.
