I've got vibration in the steering wheel in my '99 9-3 SE at speeds of 60-75 mph. Had it when I bought the car with 65K (now 73K), and thought it was the (worn) tires it had. Replaced the tires with Michelin Pilot Exalto PE3's, and vibration less, but still there. My Discount Tire dealer has since exchanged for Avon Tech M500's and now Goodyear F1 GS-D3's,(all stock 205/50/16's) and the vibration is STILL there. During this process, I've had the toe set twice, brake rotors replaced, right drive axle replaced, installed poly bushings, a subframe brace, and a steering rack brace.
I still say these issues are out-of-round tires combined with a hyper-sensitive steering system, because I was down this road years ago with an Alfa. We trued those tires, and fixed it. Now they don't true the tires. But Discount has been using the HUNTER Road Force machine for the balancing (and the tech is very experienced), and I personally stood by the machine when he did the F1's. We checked each tire carefully for runout, and all were within tolerance, as are the wheels (they are virtually perfect) Before I go back AGAIN (and face possible lynching), I would appreciate your advice on what suspension pieces might be causing at least part of this problem.
CV joints? Vibration is at constant speeds (60-75 mph- smooths out at 80-yes!). None when accelerating, but will start as soon as speed levels off and load decreases. Slightly more (sometimes) when coasting. Thoughts? Thanks for the advice on this board!
