Killed by the cat?

Hello all,
According to my local Saab dealer, my 1995 n/a 900s needs a new exhaust, front to back, including the catalytic converter and the O2 sensor. Estimated cost (in Switzerland): approximately 1,900 USD for the parts alone, most of which seems to be the cost of the cat. The car has 157,000 miles on the clock and seems to me to be in generally good condition. It has recently had new front discs and new tyres, so I'm reluctant to abandon it now, but if any other item this expensive were to fail in the near future the economics of replacing the exhaust would become ridiculous. I can find plenty of "cat-back" systems for slightly less than the price of the Saab OE parts, but no alternatives for the disproportionately expensive catalytic converter. Does it make sense to replace all this at this stage of the car's life, and should I expect any other huge bills soon? I drive about 25- to 30,000 miles per year with this car. Any advice much appreciated!
Andy
