Ah yes, the old ball joint nut! Hopefully, you have removed the nut from the lower balljoint. To do this, you most likely lossened the drive axle nut and pushed the drive axle out of the hub (towards the engine) an inch or two. Depending on what you're going to do- like replace the Mcferson strut, you may have to remove the entire strut assembly, in which case you will have to disconnect the drive shaft.

Anyway, having just replaced the struts on my daughters 900S, I tried two methids of disconnecting the ball joint. The first, whichreally didn't work well, is to use a ball joint fork (sometime referred to as a "Pickle Fork" to spread the ball joint pin from the hole in the lower assembly. The problem with this was that yo ustill had very tight clearances to work within and you stand a very good chance of tearing the lower ball joint rubber cover.
The second method was much easier. After removing the ball joint nut, put some upwards pressure on the bottom of the control arm assembly - the long black thing that the McFerson strut fits into. Then take a heavy hammer and strike the back of the assembly - where the ball joint arm fits into. Again not a lot of room but two shots with a heavy ball pein hammer and the ball joint dropped out.
