Depends on what car...(longish) Posted by Peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Saab Maintenance, Todd ![]() |
In my experience, considering it's a 10-year old car...so I'm comparing it with other 10-year old cars that I've owned. I consider "maintenance" to be everything outside of brake pads, tires, muffler, wiper blades etc...basically anything that's proprietary.
More maintenance issues than a Toyota or Volvo, about the same as a Subaru or BMW of that vintage. Less, I'd say, than a Volkswagen, although my mother's Passat has been oddly bulletproof.
Can't say about American cars.
I think the real issues with Saab maintenance are due to the relative scarcity of the cars, especially in the hinterlands. Your average "import" mechanic will probably apply the "if the only tool you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" approach. Most (but not all) Saab dealers will screw you on "genuine Saab parts" and set-price "diagnosis."
My rule of thumb, having owned six Saabs in various locations around the U.S.: If you can't find a good independent mechanic who understands Saabs, don't buy a used one. Even if you're a good DIY'er, there are going to be some things you probably won't want to tackle.
