The new unit comes sealed and the incondesent material has a certain level of moisture absorption. This level can handle the amount of moisture from opening up the system and drawing a vacume and reintroducing refridgerent to the system. If you took a new dryer and took out the plugs and left it out for a period of time it would be trashed for its intended purpose. Once the units takes the moisture out of the initial system no moisture can be introduced to the sealed system and it has done it's job. If you open it you must put on a new dryer if you value your compressor. This is why all compressor warranties are contengent on proof of purchase of a new dryer when you installed the new compressor.
