1995 900S 5sp 92k miles
I have sludgy residue on my engine block. The area on the block in question is above the serp. belt idler pully, towards the fire wall from the ps and water pump. It looks like there is much more seepage below the idler pully, but I can't tell for sure. I suppose it could be a bad seal somewhere on the bottom of the engine and its traveling upward via the belt, but the belt is dry and there isn't any squealing. Another thought I had was that it could be a failing waterpump. From time to time I get a low coolant message and the coolant res. will be about a quarter cup low. I have always just figured that I have a loose hose clamp that I haven't found yet. I replaced the valve cover gasket a couple of months ago to see how everything looked on top. Aside from a coat of varnish there wasn't any sludge that I could see. At that time I took a torque wrench to my head bolts to see if they were within spec, which they were. What I didn't do is back them out a ways and then retorque them, which now I know I should have done. My car is pretty well maintained, consistant 3-5k mile oil changes its entire life. Until I became the owner it had every 10k mile dealer check up with the last one being at 65k. I will take it in for the 95k check up when its due, but in the mean time would like to know whats going on here. Anyone have any thoughts?
