'97 900 SE turbo, and I usually shift around 2500 - 3000 in first because I cannot stand the low amount of power in second if you shift too early. In my car first gear redline is just at 30 MPH. Safe to redline, I did it probably more often than most people and the clutch went at an average 110k miles. The shift up light only designates best fuel economy. My 3rd gear shift up to 4th gear light comes on if I'm not accelerating or accelerating slowly around 30 MPH.
Shifting is really all about feel. For the most part, the slower you go the better gas mileage you get. If you like going a little faster, do that, it's fine but you will lose some gas mileage. Give it some time and you'll get it all figured out. :)
