Because it probably partially broke. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Why does the clutch cable go slack?, Henry G., Tue, 23 Aug 2005 10:33:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It might be as easy as that the self adjusting mechanism let go so that you need to grab the cable and wiggle it a little for the self adjuster to "wake up" and do it's work but I'm more certain that the plastic portion of the cable that is attached to transmission housing broke internally.
It is a very poor design of the cable and they have actually missed a critical part when designing the cable in that the plastic part of cable stop doesn't butt up against the rubber stop that in turn is seated in the transmission.
This allow the whole force of the clutch operation to rest on a tiny little plastic surface at the bottom od steel sheating and that plastic disc break free.
When that happens, it creates enough slack in the cable to let the adjuster "max out" but you still have enough left to operate the clutch even though it is perfect.
The last cable I installed I cut a groove through a washer and placed it between the plastic cable sheating and the rubber stop, filling the void that the designer missed. Time will tell if it works better.
