OUCH... P0171 is a sign of major trouble. This is a lean burn on bank 1. I had the same scenerio along with a bad MAF sensor CEL (P0106) reading which lead to a disintegrated (well beyond cracked) piston 1. Your bent spark plug is a very good sign that your piston was cracked. Surprised there wasnt a leak down or compression test to follow.
I got lucky when my 99 viggen blew and I eventually found a SAAB warranty repair that was very familiar with this problem. I talked with about 7 saab dealers before finding one that even acknowledged they've heard of this problem. I also got lucky when that mechanic was talking with the west coast rep about my car and that saab offered to cover parts for the rebuild. This was about 2/3 the total cost even though my car was way out of warranty.
I think Saab is aware of the problem but not willing to pony up at this point. Sorry to hear about your story because it sounds like it chould have been prevented. Hound Saab until you get some conclusive answers. Make sure the work is done by a Saab dealer or authorized warranty repair... these are your best chances at getting reimbursment. File a claim with Saab as well
If you decide to fix the car be sure to change the MAF sensor and update the software. The new software will run the car richer to avoid altitude lean out.
Sorry to hear about the car.
