is it possible that some are overreacting? Most certainly. However, one could ruminate on this at length and never be able to determine the true percentage or frequency of unnecessary DIC replacements. I would argue (hope) that any competent dealership mechanic would at least attempt to investigate the various causes you list. Short of doing so, it would seem, would be to treat a symptom rather than a cause. That is, a new DIC would still invoke the same CEL were a fouled plug, clogged injector, etc. to exist, would it not? That point notwithstanding, one would be foolish to believe that unnecessary DIC replacements have not occurred. This is somewhat to be expected given that they are a known issue and the fact that failure may be entirely unpredictable and occur at the most unfortunate of times (e.g., while on a highway in heavy traffic). Imagine the uproar were one to have taken their car to a dealership, the DIC is NOT replaced, and a failure occurs a short time later. Accordingly, many dealerships likely believe that the most prudent action is to replace the DIC.
My 01 Viggen is covered by the Saab CPO and I can honestly state that, should my local dealership decide to install a new DIC free of charge, I would welcome the exchange. However, my sentiments would likely be different were I to incur such a cost without a thorough diagnosis (i.e., examination and ruling out of alternative factors) beforehand.
