shifter broken?

my shifter on my 2002 Viggen is broken. The plastic retainer that holds the shifter ball into the assembly is cracked and the spring is missing (I know my 1995 9000 has a spring holding it down) I can still shift the car at slow speeds (to move it around the lot).
My question is is there an easy fix like just pulling off the knob and boot then sliding a new retainer in, or do I have the pull the whole assembly?
thanks
