I noticed some trouble getting into fifth gear on Thursday in my 96 SETC with 189K. Made it into work OK and on the drive home it seemed OK until taking an off ramp after 20 minutes or so in fifth and couldn't shift out on the on ramp (clutch did put the car into neutral). Double clutched, sweated a few bullets, and was able to shift. Everything was fine after that for the rest of the drive home, all gears OK.

The next morning, I pulled the car to the end of the driveway, got it into neutral, and the couldn't get it into any gear while the motor was running. Turned the car off, popped the hood, checked the clutch cable adjustment by pulling the spring, and then was able to get the car into gear (with the engine off). All gears worked, including fifth.

Replaced the clutch cable today, but no improvement. In fact, things are worse - can't get into fifth even with the engine off. When the engine is running, things are terrible, with no ability to get into any gears.

Finally, I checked the shifter alignment. Everything checked out OK.

I don't know if my car has the upgraded linkage. I had the clutch replaced at 125K three years ago. The work order doesn't mention the linkage, although the tech who did the work knows Saabs like the back of his hand.

Sorry for the long description, any thoughts? I think my options are try the upgraded linkage or get it towed to a shop for whatever (hopefully not a new tranny). I'd like to try the linkage, the nearest shop I'd trust is quite a ways away.

Thank you!

Ian
