Axle support bearing q

I had my car serviced at the local big name lube shop. They left the fill plug off the manual tranny. I drove the car for 1000mi before noticing fluid. There was definitely fluid leaking from the top where the plug is. I took it to the big name dealer and they said the axle support bushing is shot and that caused a leaky axle seal (2k$ labor 150 for the part).
One person here said there is normally play in the driveshaft, and it may just be the seal, but he didn't answer the question of whether I lost a significant amount of fluid driving it with the plug off. Any ideas?
Did engough leak to cause the bearing to go? My friends tell me the big name lube shop buys motors all the time. Money isn't an issue, but fairness and time are, so do I pursue this with the lube shop?
Thoughs, sympathy, and rants are all welcome
Thanks,
Bruce
