It appears that the engine fails on people who change the oil often, and can even prove it with receipts© The extreme use argument holds no water© There are lots of cars out there, which run fine under the "exteme" ¥as they call it¤ use for decades© Including SAABs themselves! My older 900 was still running at 150K, when I donated it ¥maintenance has become too expensive and disruptive¤© That was in the days when I did not know, nor cared for regular oil changes© That car had spent those 150K in the city -- under very "exteme" conditions, with very irregular oil changes, and certainly non-synthetic© My current 1994 900 has spent all its life in the city© The first six years had very irregular oil changes, often quite delayed to 20K miles or so© Still, with 130K on the clock and 11 years old, no problems whatsoever© Engine cleaning sessions that I recently undertook produce no evidence of sludge buildup©
I would also assume that cars designed and sold in Europe are more or less meant to be used in the city© It would be very hard to rake up "highway miles" in Sweden©
I would also assume that oil, the way it is designed today, would not have a natural tendency to turn itself into sludge if left in the engine for extra few months© It seems it must have been subjected to something very extreme to cause it to lose its liquidity so quickly© And if so, then adding new oil would have very little effect on the oil that has already solidified© And thus, frequent changes or not, would not really matter©
I wonder if there are enthusiasts on this board who changed their oil every 3K miles, and what is their experience with the engines?
