The pressure reservoir cap have a certain pressure valve and when that pressure is exceeded it will open the valve and all extra coolant will flow out.
But the pressure to open that valve is high enough so if some hoses here and there are marginal or the head gasket is on its way, it might be the straw that broke the camels back and it blows a hose or so.
I think the valve opens at around 15-17 Psi.
