Second post. I just bought a 1996 SET, manual tranny, with 107k. My previous car was a VW TDI and I was active on the TDIclub board. The 900 is great but sometimes I get some noise from the suspension. I've searched extensively for info on this issue and found alot of helpful stuff. I narrowed it down to either a worn tranny mount, or inner CV driver.

The noise is a clunk that can be both heard and felt through the drivetrain. It happpens irregularly but appears to happen mostly when cornering/accelerating/decelerating over bumps. There was also a shake in the steering wheel at 55-65mph.

When I went underneath, there was alot of play in the inner driver on the drivers side axle, so I attempted to replace it. Bought a whole new (reman) axle from eEuroparts and slapped it in. There was still alot of play in the inner driver when the new one went into the tranny, but at least the CV joint play (on the axle iteslf) was gone. Before insterting the new driver into the tranny, I noticed alot of play on the splined reciever just inside the transmission and it seemed like there could be a worn bushing or bearing on that piece.

Is this bushing/bearing inside the transmission capable of producing these noises/effects? Is it replaceable?

My other hypothesis is the transmission mount, or one of the other engine mounts. I did notice this morning, when I watched the engine while my girlfriend started the car for me (see my other post for why I did this), that the engine seemed to shift quite a bit when she shifted from reverse to neutral. Not so much engine torque when she started the car though...just when shifting out of gear.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help! I sure am glad you guys are here (though I sorta miss the TDIclub).
