Warm Rotors

Question, how warm should my brake rotors get during normal commuter use? I travel about 12 miles one way with traffic and all on back roads it takes about 15-20 minutes. This morning I heard a something like a piece of metal pinging off the bottom of the car which caused me to check the rotors. They where more than warm but not quite steaming hot. (All 4).
And advice appreciated.
