The small & large plenum o-rings are present & in good condition on the plenum-to-TB contact point & are lubed slightly, I pulled of the single plenum retaining clip & pushed/pulled on the plenum with the engine running; the engine stalled suddenly once the plenum broke free of the TB (very positive "lock" on the TB from the engine vacuum); I had previously used a propane leak tester around the TB & found not leak at the shaft seal. I have not looked at the plugs lately & I put in a bottle of Techron concentrate when I first got the car last Nov., I will see if oil is pooling around the plugs. I had sprayed water on the coil & distributor at night & not seen any change in engine speed or visible arcing so I believe the ignition system is ok; I have successfully driven in the rain several times and as long as the revs are kept up, the engine keeps running (perhaps the engine is able to "process" any water drawn in when at high revs?); I think ignition would cut off at any speed plus the engine will always idle even if it can't rev up.
I understand your comment about a low press drop across the plenum at idle but as soon as the throttle is opened the engine's vacuum is introduced into the plenum so any pooled water inside or outside the plenum would be drawn into the engine. If the plenum seal halves are poor around a good portion of the plenum then perhaps this could have a large effect when the throttle valve first opens, the effect would be more noticeable at slower engine speeds and lower air flows and become unimportant at higher engine speeds. Sealing the plenum all the way around should test this theory. I was thorough about testing the vacuum lines to the FPR, AIR system (replaced marginal hoses here) including its solenoid & vacuum operated valve by the radiator, and charcoal canister system (I even removed the fender liner & checked the canister); all done using a hand-held vacuum pump.
Thanks for the input, I have quite a bit of experience w/ other brands but Saab is new to me.
