Puffing could be a PCV hose off or busted nylon fitting into the valve cover (common), often noted as a engine or exhaust smell in the cabin.
Slow ticking is sticking valves or lifters. Can be cleared up with engine flush or cleaners that claim to free sticking valves etc. A change of oil type can help, but one needs to consider problems with sludge or varnish from the past before switching to synthetic.
