It is a flow restriction. Elimination of flow restrictions increase power and responsiveness. The T5 system boosts to a specific pressure without regard to air temperature and density. Flow restrictions increase the work that the turbo compressor needs to do on the air flow, which increases tempuratures and reduces charge air densisty. Making the compressor work harder requires more power from the turbo's turbine and the wastegate is more closed which increases exhaust manifold backpressure. That backpressure is what powers the turbine. Increased exhaust backpressure directly reduces the engines torque. At 15 PSI of boost (modified system), one should expect that the exhaust backressure would be around 30 PSI. This 2:1 pressure ratio is typical for moset OEM turbo setups. So anything that you can do to reduce flow restrictions should be done. So that silencer, and rework the TBTC (1994-1999 exl Viggen) and air box 3" duct mod. For any serious changes, the Viggen IC should also be fitted.
