...for those following along in my Mad Scientist plot to revive a 95 SE turbo automatic with 230,000+ on the clock, here's the rundown so far:

Car cost: $600 (advertised as parts car -- but not yet!)
Ignition switch: $170
Fr Lt Control Arm (old balljoint was BAAAAD): $50
Miscellany: $30
Total so far: $850

The car now starts and runs reliably and steadily. I just finished the task of dropping the oilpan to reseal it, since the previous wrencher used the wrong stuff. Loctite 518 or its equivalent only please! I happened to have some from a rebuild a couple of years ago, and I'm pleased to say it was still perfectly useable. The oilpan task was a bit of a challenge because I had to chisel out all the oilpan bolts while lying underneath the car. And I had to figure out how to lower just the front of the subframe while keeping off the exhaust I couldn't drop, all without the aid of a proper manual.

Car's running well but has some valve clatter and probably rod knock. Oil pan showed previous sludge cleanout job (maybe several?) -- no records to indicate when this was done. Just cleaned everything up quickly and reassembled, using original pickup tube o-ring.

Loctited all around perimeter, including entirely encircling the bolt openings. Applied locktite to the mating surface around the oil pickup tube -- can't remember if that's proper or not.

The car has a groaning left shock -- oddly only nearest its "rest" position, as if the seals are a little dry. Could this be the strut mounts?

The oil pump and/or timing cover (or some mistake I made) are causing low oil pressure. Oil light flickers at idle. My guess is this is nothing new, and only showed up after I installed a fresh oil pressure switch.

It also badly needs a transmission mount, which it will get this week before I put a plate on it and see how long it takes to blow up.

Other than that, you should see the amount of soot all over the plugs and -- oh boy -- the front O2 sensor. But that's what happens when someone drives the car for an unknown duration (many months at least) with the hose off the fuel pressure regulator and a nicely deteriorated set of hoses elsewhere.

Let's see how a little love and attention transforms this car!
