A few things, besides the oil change history and DIC:
--A/C compressor; does the clutch engage quietly and does it blow cold? The SE will have the ACC option which if set correctly uses the compressor a lot.
--front strut cartridge/mounts will hopefully have been replaced. Otherwise, esp. with the stock 50 series tires, you'll be feeling every pavement joint.
--SID pixels; as many as possible should be lighted.
Overall my 97 900set w/83k has been reliable and fast, with only the usual issues like the SID pixels, semi functional headlight wipers, DIC failure, A/C compressor nearing the end of its lifespan.
$4,995 isn't a bad price, depending on things like paint quality, uncracked seat leather and whether you can determine how recently some of the above items have been tended to, if necessary.
The ng 900 is certainly a different car than the og 900; my father describes it as an Opel with the key in the center...between us having owned about 10 og 900s, I have to say i prefer ride and handling of the old ones, but most of them are now pretty thrashed and really aren't suitable for daily driving. The new 900s are just softer all around, for better and worse.
