I don't have as many years of practical application experience as Dick has, so if he feels the immediate symptom you're seeing (smoke) is not being caused by the oil, then I'll defer to his experience. And, while syn oil might actually get past the rings easier than dino, Dick's not the first person I've heard to say syn oils burn cleaner than dinos.
As for switching back to 10W-30, I'd say do it only if it makes you feel more comfortable. (It's not worth losing sleep at night!) If it makes you feel any better, 5W-40 is actually thicker than 10W-30 in pretty much all situations EXCEPT below -20°F. So, everything else being equal (& in good repair), it's going to be a better oil to resist smoking.
I'd still consider the Auto-Rx thing, if you really want to eliminate all ring-sealing doubt. Here's another link, this time from an unassociated 3rd party:
