Modern automatic cars have had a shift interlock that requires that you put on the brake to take the car out of park. Blame that on the 60 Minutes Audi debacle in 1986. When the battery is dead you have to override it by pushing the little rectangle just to the left of where the shifter goes into the shift quardrant. That will release it out of park without the electronic signal from the brake pedal.
BTW you have an "NG900 - OG9-3" the last year for the hatchback, not a "9-3SS" 2003 and up.
