New whining noise at startup

I know there were a lot of posts on the subject of noises... I have read most of them (I think). However, the diversity of possible causes suggested is overwhelming. I wonder if anyone could help me narrow it down a bit. I do not know anyone around whom I could go to have it properly diagnosed. The elimination procedure, I am afraid, is far too challenging for me. I do not know how to remove the belt or put it back on again. My major question now is whether I have something I can ignore for a while, or whether my car is going to be toast unless I do something quick.

So, here it goes.

This is '94 NG900 non-turbo, approaching 120K, manual transmission.

A new noise appeared a few days ago. There was nothing done to the car for 5 months now. The noise is best described as whine. It appears when I start the car. It begins 5 seconds after the engine has started. It starts slowly, like some motor starting to spin, then gradually goes into a high-pitch whine (not very loud or sharp), then runs for 1-2 minutes, then spins itself down and disappears. If I am driving or standing still has no effect on the noise. Once it reached its high pitch, it does not alter.
It is not the air conditioner, because it's off.

I was trying to listen but I cannot pinpoint the location where it is coming from. It only starts when the engine is running. Just turning the electricity ON does not trigger it. It does not appear to matter if the car is hot or cold. The only thing that matters is how long it's been left standing. Early in the morning, I get good 2 minutes of it. When I drive, then shut the car down and let it stand for 10 minutes, I will get a good 1 minute of it. If I shut the engine down, then restart immediately, I would get a very brief whine ( less than 10 sec ).

While reading the other posts, I found the ones about the oil pressure light, and sure enough -- mine is broken (does not light up). There is a proper amount of oil in the engine, and I do not see any new leaks under the car. I have a perpetual leak of coolant somewhere that nobody was able to locate for me.

My great hopes right now is that it is not one of the pumps. I recon if they were broken, they would be broken all the time (and not just when I start the car). I sincerely hope that it is just a gasket somewhere ... or some part working itself loose ...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-- Nick
