Recently sold a 1994 900 SE with 154k on it. Engine was clean and no sludge. Using same oil and change regimen, my 00 9-3 recently ate a motor due to sludge at under 70k. Warm climate, mostly highway miles, oil changed every 5k with 0-40 Mobil 1 in both cars. During a valve cover gasket change in both cars last spring, I found to my horror that the older car had a far cleaner engine.
So maybe the answer to longevity is an occasional Auto RX flush on the newer cars. But I noticed something recently that could have contributed to the engines demise - a blown crankcase ventilation check valve. This can send pressure the wrong way and drive crud back into the motor when manifold pressure increases. I could blow though it in both directions which aint supposed to happen. The car ran better (has an 01 engine now) after I replaced all the cruncy vacuum hose and the check valve. My persistent oil leak from the black box in the vent system also stopped. Hmmmm, are we on to something here?
This is an inexpensive, easy to change part and obviously not very durable. We should be checking these annually and replacing where needed, especially on the 99-02 cars.
