Wrong Radio Codes Used

My battery went dead. The radio wanted a code. So my daughter gave it one. The wrong one. I went to the dealer and he added what he thought was the right code (according to the S/N of the radio). That did no good.
He had a special radio guy there who tried the wrong code (the one the dealer had ) several times. I finally found the right code in my paperwork. He tried that and it would not accept even the right code.
I'm guessing that you have a few tries to get the right number and then it locks up. Am I correct? Is there any way to unlock it or reset it in order to apply the correct code?
