'95 900S - Fuel Efficiency Has Dropped

Hi, I've had my 1995 900S for about 6 months now. The fuel efficiency at the beginning was great, around 32mpg on the highway. So a month ago I started getting a low coolant level warning. Because I had a lot of work done on the car by some mechanics who specialise in Saab, I didn't think anything was wrong. So I've just topped off the coolant (I've only done it twice and it stopped bugging me about it).
Now I sometimes do, sometimes don't, get a Check Engine light (it seems to depend on what speed I'm going... I have no light at lower speed, sometimes I get it at highway speeds). My fuel efficiency has dropped to about 26mpg highway.
I've used techron twice (with both of my oil changes), and I have them put castrol gtx in. I always use 89 octane when I fill up.
I haven't noticed a difference in power. Any tips for me on how to get things in good shape?
Oh, and could someone tell me how to check the oil? The Saab dipstick doesn't make much sense to me. I read the owner's manual, and so I look at the plastic bulbous end of it and I can't see any indicator of what the level should be. Sorry if that sounds like a complete newbie question!
