Bought a 2000 Saab 9-3 SE about 3 months ago.
Had 40k miles on it, great shape, etc...
Had one major problem prior to buying it:
This May the car had a problem...check engine light was on. Mechanics at local Saab dealer dug around, found a problem IGN module. They replaced the plugs & IGN.
After replacing plugs & IGN, there was a problem with the SPS Tronic, and it caused the battery to die while it was being tested.
They replaced the battery, but could not communicate with the Tronic-7. Apparently when they replaced the battery, the Tronic shorted. Ended up replacing the battery again & the Tronic.
Before I bought the car in August, I was assured everything was fixed. Mechanic swore up & down, and I had it checked out by another garage that agreed.
After having the car for about 6 to 8 weeks, the car started bucking badly. Didn't matter how fast or slow & it got progressively worse over a couple of days. The only thing that seemed to correlate to the bucking was the turbo pressure gauge. Brought it in, and they said it was a problem with the throttle housing. According to my invoice, they replaced the throttle body & housing, which was covered under warranty.
Then, at the beginning of this week, car had been running like a charm. No problems. Had driven the car home from work - no problems at all. Went out to start the car about 2 hours later - no dice. Lights were on, electric was fine, car cranked & seemed to turn over, but wouldn't catch. Left it for an hour, went back, started up first try - no problem. Like nothing happened. No error messages or anything.
Two days later, was driving the car home from downtown (about half hour), was four blocks from home, and the engine stopped. Temp gauge went to zero, turbo went to zero, engine shut off - coasted to a stop. Lights stayed on, electrical was fine. Could not get the car started again. Same as last time - electrical was fine, but wouldn't catch.
Brought it back to the dealer, asked them to check the IGN, etc... They said it was a crankshaft position sensor. Picked it up, and ran ok on the way home, but perhaps don't trust it to drive.
Could the problem have been something other than a crank position sensor (ie related to the other problem in May?)? Is there a larger problem here with the combination of these things going on?
This is Saab #4 for me, and I want there to not be a long-term problem!!!
Thanks for the help!!
