No lift or special tools are necessary, but they would certainly make it easier. I changed my own clutch in my driveway with the help of a friend and my dad. If you have a large jack, that will get the car off the ground more than enough to remove the transmission. The most important tools are just a good selection of 1/2" and 3/8" drive sockets, ratchets, and breaker bars, and more than one jack. I upgraded the cluch on my '97 900 to a Viggen clutch and converted to whole system to a hydraulic mechanism. It's a huge improvement over the old cable, and infinitely more reliable.
