Had this problem on my 1995, 900XS.Thought I had sealed everything in sight and the carpet in the boot(trunk?) was getting really smelly, to the point of embarrassment! As a last resort I stripped out the carpet and side panels, to let them dry, and waited for the rain to come.Trouble was it always seemed to rain at night, only to find water in the boot in the morning. Eventually the rain arrived during daylight, I sat in the car and waited. The tell tale drip came from the DRIVERS side rear light fitting( I'm guessing your passenger side)and ran along the rear of the boot to the passenger's side forming a puddle. I had forgotten to take into account the camber on my drive! The camber is hardly noticable but water is clever old stuff. I took the light assembly apart and found the gasket had seperated from the bodywork and dirt/dusthad got between foam gasket and bodywork.I removed the gasket(carefully)cleaned the whole area with petrol, gasket too, applied silicone sealer all round pushed the gasket onto the sealer and refitted the light assembly. I took the precaution of carrying out this procedure on the other rear light fitting too. Problem solved, dry boot,no smells, but it was a damned frustrating few months.
