I think that the timing chain cover might be deeper. I remember an article about a 2.3L put into a NG900. But that was a rally vehicle with big $$$ mods.
Engine mount points on the block may be completely wrong.
The 1996 Bosch ECU would have to go and you would need to splice a different ECU. The hacking of the wiring harness would be extensive. You will end up with a lot of money dumped into a 1996 book value which means that a minor accident would have the vehicle written off. I feel that your time and money would be better spent otherwise. The 15% increase in displacement will improve power, but that is trivial compared to what you can easily get from a 2.0L turbo. You also do not want to convert your vehicle to turbo. The best way to get turbo power is to trade in the old vehicle.
When you alter the engine in a fashion that you propose, the result may be subject to emissions testing and the result of that would have to conform to the standards in force in 1996.
