Because I have 152K on my car and I am too cheap to pop for new struts, I carry an oak plywood prop rod for my hatch (I was building cabinet at the time the hatch struts went). Both of my struts are blown, but exposure to Minnesota winters has not helped a bit. They definitely started to go originally during the winter.
I noticed with some surprise, that there are no struts on the 9-3SC hatch. The mechanism is contained within the roof and the hatch articulates from the top. I do not know whether this will be any more robust (it certainly will not be cheaper to fix) but it is very clean looking.
